O2 is continuing its journey toward a faster, more reliable and more sustainable mobile network with the planned switch-off of its 3G services. Like many mobile networks in the UK and around the world, this change allows O2 to focus investment where it matters most – on high-performing 4G and 5G networks that deliver a better experience for customers.
The 3G switch-off programme began earlier this year, with services already successfully withdrawn in locations such as Watford in September. From November, the programme expanded into Scotland, starting in the east, including Aberdeen and Dundee. These changes have been completed smoothly and are helping prepare the network for the future.
Why is 3G being switched off?
Over recent years, 3G has been largely replaced by 4G and 5G, carrying only a small fraction of network traffic. While 3G now accounts for less than 4% of data usage, it consumes around 11% of total network energy. In contrast, 4G and 5G handle 96% of mobile data traffic and are up to ten times more energy-efficient.
By retiring older technology, O2 can further enhance coverage, deliver faster download speeds, improve call quality, and make meaningful progress toward its sustainability goals.
What customers need to know
The full 3G switch-off is scheduled to complete from 1 January 2026, when both 2G and 3G networks will be withdrawn. This marks an important milestone in the evolution of the UK’s mobile infrastructure.
We’re pleased to confirm that all connections requiring VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling and the correct APN settings have already been successfully applied well ahead of the deadline. This proactive approach ensures a smooth transition for the vast majority of users.
However, customers using older, legacy devices that do not support 4G, 5G or VoLTE will need to upgrade their devices to continue making calls and using mobile data once 3G is switched off. Without this, services may be limited, particularly as 2G coverage is also reduced.
Additional updates
The Boostbox solution, which relies on the 3G network, will be fully withdrawn on 31 December 2025. Existing services will continue to be supported until that date, after which customers are encouraged to use Wi-Fi Calling as a reliable alternative for indoor coverage.
Looking ahead
This transition represents a major step forward in delivering a modern, resilient mobile network that meets today’s demands and tomorrow’s expectations.
Thank you for your continued partnership and cooperation during this transition. We wish you a joyful festive season and a successful New Year as we move confidently into the next generation of connectivity.
